To Be CertainBy Pansy Lai Six weeks ago the world witnessed two major natural disasters in Sichuan and Burma where hundreds of thousands faced sudden death. My friend was recently living and working there. When I called her, both of us shivered at the possibility of her being there, but even more so, we were chilled by the thought of those she knew there who may have passed away without knowing the Lord Jesus Christ. We often feel that we are safe ourselves, that nothing in our lives would change and it would continue indefinitely. However, even if we don’t face sudden death, we face certain death. Whatever work we do, however much it contributes to the wellbeing of our community, will be destroyed, if not in a natural disaster, then on the day when Jesus returns, where “The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.” (The Bible, The book of 2 Peter 3:10) Dear friends, I urge you to pause for a moment to consider this: what do you spend your time and effort on day by day? Will these stand when the day of disaster comes? Have you considered your relationship with God, whether you will be accepted by Him when you meet Him? Have you believed in Jesus, who can guarantee that you will be welcomed into the arms of God? Your Comments:
I have pondered this same thing so many times- I struggle with the fact that God made me- and therefore knows the decisions I am going to make and what is in my heart, so then I wonder if we have free will at all- because it is all pre-determined. if that makes sense. But i am a firm believer that we cannot put God into a box and assume we know how to get into heaven and what we need to believe or do. I believe, if you want a relationship with God and have love for him in your heart, then you will not be turned away because hell is the absence of God. It is simply God saying ‘you wanted a life without me, so I will give you that’. I believe you had to know- and then reject God to be condemned to hell. I don’t think it is as simple and clear cut as us humans think. God is so much bigger than that. nic on 09/09/2008 Nic, I think you are right - God is so much bigger than us it is hard to describe him properly in terms we can understand. He is a judge but he is a just judge. He will judge by what we could know given our circumstances and situation. People will not be turned away from heaven because they never heard about Jesus and so did not follow Him. But there is an arguement in Romans 1 that suggests that no one is completely ignorant of God but has some knowledge (or sneaking suspicion) that he is there. David on 22/10/2008 |
