If it is scientifically proven that there is no God then why do people still believe in him? I don’t believe in God, and some people say that the consequence for that is death. But I’m still alive.

It is interesting you believe science has proved there is no God, because there are many scientists today who are either Christian or who conclude that we cannot explain our universe without the presence of God. Even the greatest of scientists - Albert Einstein, shared this belief. Here is what he had to say:

“every one who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe—a spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel humble.  In this way the pursuit of science leads to a religious feeling of a special sort, which is indeed quite different from the religiosity of someone more naive.” [http://www.skepticfiles.org/atheist/einstein.htm]

He also said

“No one can read the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus. His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filled with such life.” [http://www.ctinquiry.org/publications/reflections_volume_1/torrance.htm]

What makes the Christian faith so credible is that God revealed himself by sending his Son, Jesus to earth. This is completely unique among world religions. Jesus said to his disciples “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” [John 14:9].

The fact that millions of people across the world believe in God is because it is profoundly true. The message of the Bible is that we have all turned our backs on God and lived life our own way. For that we deserve God’s judgment and eternal condemnation / death. We all die eventually ... it’s a fact of life. Not even modern day science has managed to change that one. But when we do die we are going to have to give an account to our maker. Being a good person won’t be good enough either, because God is perfect and no matter how good we might have been, we don’t stack up against God’s perfect standards. [Romans 3:10-12]

This is why God sent his Son, Jesus into the world. He came to die in our place and take the punishment that our rebellion against God deserved. In that crucifixion 2,000 yrs ago, he reconciled us back to God. This is great news, because our eternal future is no longer dependent on our own fallible efforts. We merely need to trust that Jesus has done it for us already. [John 3:16]

I think people believe, because deep down they know they are not perfect; deep down they know there is a God and being at peace with Him brings great joy and assurance. So, let me encourage you to check out what the Bible has to say for yourself. Read one of the Gospels [e.g. Mark] and see for yourself.
